AMOSS

Akhila Malankara Orthodox Shusrushaka Sangham - forming acolytes in the Holy Qurbana, sacraments, and worship of our Ballarat parish.

Akhila Malankara Orthodox Shusrushaka Sangham (AMOSS) forms altar servers in the beliefs, traditions, and practices of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church - with particular care for the Holy Qurbana, the Holy Sacraments, and the great feasts and fasts of the Church year. Under the guidance of our Vicar, AMOSS members offer selfless service in the worship and spiritual life of our parish.

Serving at the Holy Altar

An acolyte is ordained to serve God at the Holy Altar. In every Qurbana, acolytes assist the priest, carry the liturgy forward with reverence, and help the congregation pray. They are not helpers at the margins of worship - they are an essential part of the Church's liturgical ministry.

Learning the faith through service

AMOSS exists to teach young servers not only what to do, but why it matters: the meaning of the sacraments, the rhythm of the liturgical calendar, and the dignity of service in the Orthodox tradition. Training happens at the altar, in instruction, and through the example of those who have served before.

Mentorship across generations

Our senior acolytes actively mentor younger servers - guiding them in the duties, gestures, and disciplines of altar service until confidence and reverence become second nature. That chain of teaching, from one generation to the next, is how the parish keeps its worship faithful, beautiful, and alive.

Prayer beyond Sunday

Most of our acolytes also join the Saturday evening prayers, deepening their spiritual life beyond the Sunday Qurbana. Regular prayer, regular service: AMOSS shapes habits that stay with a person long after they leave the altar steps.

Serve with us

If you or your child would like to learn altar service, speak to our Vicar or a senior acolyte after Qurbana. No prior experience is needed — only willingness, attentiveness, and a desire to serve Christ in the worship of His Church.
