About St. Dionysius
The life and witness of St. Geevarghese Mar Dionysius Vattasseril, the Great Luminary of Malankara and a father of the Indian Orthodox Church.

St. Geevarghese Mar Dionysius Vattasseril, Malankara Metropolitan, was a bright light for the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church during her dark and tumultuous times. With spiritual courage, learning, and steadfastness, he helped guide the Church from the bonds of foreign temporal oppression toward freedom and self-governance.
Known lovingly as Malankara Sabha Bhasuran, the Great Luminary of Malankara, Thirumeni gave his whole life to the Holy Church. His memory is treasured not simply as history, but as a living invitation to prayer, truth, courage, and faithful service.
A saint formed by prayer, scholarship, and courage
These milestones trace the arc of Vattasseril Thirumeni’s life: from priest and teacher to Malankara Metropolitan, defender of the Church’s freedom, and canonised saint.
Geevarghese was born on 31 October 1858 in Mallappalli, near Kottayam, into the Vattasseril family.
He was ordained deacon in 1879 and priest in 1880, serving the Church with unusual seriousness from a young age.
As Fr. V. J. Geevarghese, he taught at Parumala and later served in key Church institutions including the Old Seminary and M.D. Seminary.
He was consecrated as Geevarghese Mar Dionysius VI on 31 May 1908, after being chosen by the Malankara Association.
Following the repose of Mar Dionysius V, he took up the office of Malankara Metropolitan and shepherded the Church through years of intense conflict.
His historic contribution was the establishment of the Catholicate in Kerala, a defining sign of the Church’s self-identity and autocephaly.
He entered eternal rest on 23 February 1934, after helping prepare the ground for the Church constitution and entrusting the Church’s welfare to its Synod.
The Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church canonised him as a saint in 2003. His feast is observed each year on 23 February.
